2019 ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair will take place at Shanghai Exhibition Center

November 7-10, 2019

The highly anticipated seventh edition of ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair will take place from November 7 to 10 at Shanghai Exhibition Center. 110 world’s leading galleries from 18 countries and 57 cities were selected to present contemporary art and design by established and emerging artists.

As one of the most important contemporary art fairs in Asia, ART021 reinforces its ongoing commitment to leveraging local recourses with a global perspective, supporting contemporary Chinese art and cultivating new generations of domestic collectors. Local galleries continue to be strongly presented in the 2019 edition. More than 70% of galleries have spaces in China and other Regions in Asia. While many western blue-chip galleries once again return to ART021, this year’s fair convenes a robust roster of young galleries participating in ART021 for the first time. Featured regions stretch from Europe and North America to emerging markets, including Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

ART021 has as the honor to be part of the program of China Shanghai International Arts Festival for seven consecutive years. As one of the initiators of Shanghai International Artwork Trading Month that will be launched this November, ART021 continues to collaborate with art institutions, museums, auction houses and art galleries from home and abroad to promote the vigorous development of Shanghai art market and to make Shanghai the next global art center and destination.

MAIN GALLERIES presents 80 premiere galleries focusing on 21st century contemporary art. 21 galleries join the fair for the first time including: GALLERY BATON (Seoul), BILL BRADY GALLERY (Miami), CARLIER | GEBAUER (Berlin), CARPENTERS WORKSHOP GALLERY (London), MARTA CERVERA (Madrid), FLOWERS GALLERY (London), FRIEDMAN BENDA (New York), HUNSAND SPACE (Beijing), IN SITU – FABIENNE LECLERC (Paris), DAVID KORDANSKY GALLERY (Los Angeles), GALERIE KORNFELD (Berlin), CARL KOSTYÁL GALLERY (London), GALERIE NATHALIE OBADIA (Paris), OPERA GALLERY (Hong Kong), OVER THE INFLUENCE (Hong Kong), PERMAGATE SPACE (Guangzhou), PING ART SPACE (Taipei), QUANTUM GALLERY (Shanghai), ALMINE RECH (Paris), ROSS + KRAMER GALLERY (New York), SA+ (Seoul).

DETOUR, the section by invitation investigates discourses from regions beyond the Euro-American fabricated geographic networks and canonized narratives, in a hope to understand artistic, intellectual, social, political, and economic exchanges and developments on a global scale from different viewpoints. 2019 DETOUR is entitled the Silk Roads. It focuses on intricate trade routes from an immense segment of the ancient Silk Road. The exhibition loosely follows Marco Polo’s footsteps to revisit the conflicts, compromises, and interactions in the continental network of Eurasia. 12 invited galleries from China, Korea, Iran, The United Arab Emirates, Romania, Indonesia, Thailand, and The United Kingdom will join forces to map out the renewed sensibility and influence from the regions, affording visitors an alternative mode of visual experience.

Participating galleries of the DETOUR section:

GALLERY (Seoul), HATCH ART PROJECT (Singapore), ISART GALLERY (Kaohsiung), GALLERY KICHE (Seoul), METAPHYSICAL ART GALLERY (Taipei), O2art (Beijing), ORIGINAL SONG GALLERY (Shanghai), PéKIN FINE ARTS (Beijing), THE CLUB (Tokyo), VIN GALLERY (Ho Chi Minh City), YOD GALLERY (Osaka).

BEYOND transcends the spatial limitation of traditional art-fair booths. It showcases large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations in the public area of ART021. BEYOND-EXTENDS integrates contemporary art installations into public life by placing them in the public spaces outside the fair. Through artist collaborations, BEYOND-EXTENDS promotes public art in China and engages with the local Shanghai community. This year’s BEYOND-EXTENDS will expand the scope to cover a number of commercial complexes, infiltrating city corners with more various public art projects.
